St Albert the Great was the ideal teacher. He enthused his pupils with his own passion for learning, about everything from science to astronomy. And perhaps more crucially, he helped students believe in themselves. This was especially true of his pupil St Thomas Aquinas. Albert was born in Germany in 1200, and brought up in a castle. His family were none too pleased when he decided to join the Dominicans in Padua in 1223. A university professor in Paris and Cologne, Albert was made a Bishop in 1260. Two years later, he resigned his See at Ratisbon in Germany. Church admin was not really his thing, and he longed to return to study and teaching. By the time of his death in 1280, he was known by his peers as Albert the Great. He was declared a Saint in 1931.
