Day 52 – 21st February St Kateri Tekakwitha (1656-1680)

St Kateri was born in the Mohawk fortress of Ossemenon, now known as New York State. She was the daughter of a Mohawk warrior and a catholic Algonquin woman, saved from the Iroquois. At the age of 4 she lost her parents to smallpox and was adopted by her uncle. She was introduced to Christianity by Jesuit missionaries, and she was determined to live life as a christian and a virgin. She had to escape persecution so went to Kahnawake which is now known as Quebec. It was there where she entered intense prayer but died at the age of 24.

Prayer: St Kateri Tekakwitha

Almighty God,

We thank you for the influence of

St Kateri’s life and the work

she carried out for the Church in America and Canada.

Let us feel encouraged by her when we ourselves

are persecuted for what we believe.

We make this prayer through Christ,

Your Son, Our Lord.

Amen.
