An ancient form of prayer is the slow and reverent reading of a passage of Scripture, imagining oneself present in the scene described, and consciously asking the Holy Spirit for guidance and understanding. Below are some suggested texts you may find helpful as you look at your life before God:

"The angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of a bush; he looked and the bush was blazing but was not consumed. Then Moses said, ‘I must turn aside and look at this great sight, and see why the bush is not burned up’. When the Lord saw that he had turned aside to see, God called to him out of the bush, ‘Moses, Moses!’ And he said, ‘Here I am’. Then he said, ‘Come no closer! Remove the sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground’ "
(Exodus 3: 2-5)

"Then one of the seraphs flew to me, holding alive coal that had been taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. The seraph touched my mouth with it and said: ‘Now that this has touched your lips your guilt has departed and your sins are blotted out’. Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send and who will go for us?’ And I said ‘Here I am; send me!’ "
(Isaiah 6: 6-8)

"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you…You shall go to all to whom I send you, and you shall speak whatever I command you. Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you, says the Lord" (Jeremiah 1: 5-8)

"O Lord, you have searched me and you know me. You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar… For it was you who formed my inward parts; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you for I am fearfully and wonderfully made"
(Psalm 139)

"Then Jesus called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases, and he sent them out to proclaim the Kingdom of God and to heal" (Luke 9: 1-2)

"Jesus looked at him, loved him and said, ‘You lack one thing; go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me" (Mark 10: 21-22)

"I pray that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God"
(Ephesians 3: 18-19)

"I therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness , with patience, bearing with one another in love, making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all" (Ephesians 4: 1-6)

"You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a consecrated nation, a people set apart to sing the praises of god who called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light"
I Peter 2: 9
