Research
An important part of our work in the National Office is to conduct research and evaluation, both within England and Wales and beyond, to identify areas of real growth and vitality in the Church. In other words, we must try to "read the signs of the times" (Vatican II). Good practices, ideas, and good news will thus be made available and shared for the benefit of all. Religious Life in England and Wales Recently, the National Office for Vocation carried out a study of religious life in England and Wales. This study was intended to complement and expand the data compiled annually by the Conference of Religious. The results reveal a changing and varied landscape for the congregations and communites in England and Wales and there are signs of hope as well as challenges. Although some tentative conclusions are made, the National Office set out to simply compile and review the numbers and qualitative data. This report is intended to be a snapshot of where we are today and the movements of the Holy Spirit can change direction. Numbers are just one small way of looking at the current situation for religious life and this report is not intended to give a definitive answer. However, comprehensive figures can help religious and the wider Church as they continue their valuable discussions on fostering vocations to religious life.
