Who are we?

"The Service of Love is
the fundamental
meaning of
every vocation"

John Paul II

"These different gifts of
the Spirit are present
in different ways in the
Churches of Europe;
but all of these
Churches, in every case,
are called to give a witness
of welcome and care to
every vocation. A Church
is alive to the extent
to which its expression
of the different vocations
is rich and varied."
In Verbo Tuo

"In a certain sense, vocation defines the deepest being of the Church even before her work… she is truly an assembly of those called." In Verbo Tuo

Why a National Office for Vocation?

The National Office for Vocation, opened in September 2002, is an Office of the Bishops’ Conference of England & Wales
that seeks to work collaboratively with other agencies within the Church in order to:

• Build a culture of vocation in the Church in England and Wales

• Promote the link between vocation and evangelisation

• Promote the calls to specific vocations, including marriage and single life, diocesan priesthood, permanent diaconate and consecrated life

• Support and encourage new ecclesial communities

• Recognise opportunities that arise in authentic experiences of the Gospel and engage in pastoral research into the "signs of the times"

The inspiration for the office has come from a Church document of 1997, In Verbo Tuo (New Vocations for a New Europe). This document presents us with a vision in which the whole Church is a community of "the called" that exists "to call".
